Radici - Festival of Native Grapes

The native grapes from Puglia assessed by International juries

Monopoli: From the 6th to the 8th of June 2010, also this year, at R&C Il Melograno in Monopoli, the 5th edition of RADICI "Festival of Native Grapes" will be held under the aegis of Assessorato alle Politiche Agricole and Assessorato al Turismo della Regione Puglia curated by ProPapilla Association. Among this year's novelties there is the introduction, in the competition, of two new grape categories fully dedicated to red and white minor native grapes, together with the institution of an award for the Best Organic or Biodynamic Wine. This award has been specifically designed to underline the commitment of the competition itself to the growing sensitivity of Apulian wine producers to organic farming.
The ProPapilla Association is currently collecting numerous requests for participation by wine producers (during the previous edition of the Festival 103 producers took part in the competition) and it is preparing a very ambitious and dense calendar of events for the jury and the prestigious guests. The main peculiarity of the competition is represented by  the judging formula through which the wines will be assessed. Indeed, each label will be judged by two International juries: the first one represented by wine experts and the second one by wine lovers.
This year new judges from Japan, USA and Spain, together with the already known European ones, will be in the technical jury, underlining the international dimension the event is gaining. Some of the judges' names from the 5th edition are: Paolo Zaccaria (expert wine taster at Gambero Rosso), Roberto Giuliani (wine expert, responsible for the website lavinum.it, which is one of the most relevant and re-known Italian wine-related websites), Franco Ziliani (famous journalist, expert wine taster and director of vinoalvino.org), Carlo Macchi (one of the most expert wine tasters and director of winesurf), Luciano Pignataro (expert wine taster and journalist for Il Mattino), Wilfried Moselt  (Germany- wine-writer and official wine taster), Lillian Turmes (Luxembourg - judge in many international tasting juries, journalist for international specialized magazines and writer for her own website), Tom Cannavan (Great Britain- expert wine taster and journalist, he writes for the famous magazine Decanter), Mayumi Nakagawara (Japan- writer for the magazine Wineart, he is considered one of the specialists of Italian wines and grapes in Japan and he is an AIS professional sommelier), Tom Hyland (USA- he co-operates with various magazines and writes for blogs and websites such as on Wine, Learn Italian Wines e Wine Lovers Page), Kile Philips (USA- journalist, expert of Italian wine, responsible for the blog italianfood.about.com), Christina Pickard (professional wine presenter and wine event host in London for media and television. She is a regular wine presenter on BBC's popular cooking television program, Market Kitchen) Juancho Asenjo (Spain- he co-operates with the most important website for Spanish wine), Whitney Adams (U.S.A.- one of the most well-known wine bloggers in the States), Maria Battaglia (U.S.A. - wining and dining expert journalist and director of specialized American on line magazines).
The judges will also participate in guided tours through our territory and  will visit some of the cellars in order to fully appreciate the wine growing and wine producing scenario and the variety and beauty of our region, which is able to give birth to high-quality wines.
Moreover the event and its qualified audience have been chosen by two wine writers, Wilfried Moselt (Germany) and Lilian Turmes (Luxembourg), for the presentation of their book, which collects the story of the world most prestigious places and cellars. The book, which has been raising a lot of enthusiasm, is entitled "Noblesse Oblige, and it has been created starting from a trip, whose first destination was Puglia.
During the awards ceremony for the winners of the competition, there will also be wine producers from other regions who will witness how their commitment to quality and the defense of their strong sense of belonging to their land have become the reason for being for their business.
As soon as the Festival will end, the wines from Radici will participate in the important convention for wines and spirits, World Wine Meetings held in Chicago from the 11th to the 13th of June, and many other relevant international events will follow.
